Cerac Crowns

These are in office porcelain crowns that can be made in one day. Although this seems like it would be a very good way to do things coming to an appointment only once, there are some concerns that I have seen in this process. First there is a very big learning curve and the machine to make the crowns is very expensive. The porcelain quality compared to a laboratory fabricated crown is very different and is not as good. Although the fit seems to be very good the crown does not look like a tooth.

The preferred method to restore a damaged tooth is to use a laboratory fabricated crown with a quality laboratory trained in making restoration. The quality of this type of restoration is superb. Even though the patient must come back for a second visit to have the laboratory made crown placed the outcome is well worth the inconvenience. The first appointment the tooth is prepared, and impression mold taken, and a well prepared provisional crown is cemented temporarily so that it will protect the tooth while the crown is being made. At that time another good thing takes place. The prepared tooth is allowed to heal and during this hiatus, the doctor and patient can evaluate the health of the tooth before the final restoration is cemented into place.

This kind of crown will serve the patient in a more predictable manner long term and mimics the original tooth to the highest degree possible.
